The Ronnie Skirt
The Ronnie Skirt
“Be my, Be my baby. . .” sing the Ronettes on the classic 60’s hit “Be My Baby”, the hauntingly sweet track by the ‘Bad girls of Rock and Roll’. An enduring inspiration for bands from the Beach boys to the Ramones, the iconic pencil skirts, thick eyeliner and bouffants where adopted by Amy Winehouse who often cited Ronnie as a huge influence on her look and music.
Courted by rock and roll greats such as John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix and David Bowie it was the producer of the Ronettes second album, Phil Spector that Ronnie married. The infamous producer was the biggest in the world thanks to his the pioneering ‘Wall of sound’ that he created. Unfortunately the marriage was a bad one, with the controlling Spector jealous rages culminating in him holding Ronnie hostage in their Beverly Hills mansion making sure that Ronnie would not make any more records. Ronnies mother helped her escape, with a plan they hatched over three days. She had to run barefoot as Sector would hide Ronnie’s shoes so she couldn’t go outside. Eventually Ronnie would sing again and tours the world playing to huge audiences. Phil Spector was sentenced to life in prison in 2009 for the murder of Lana Clarkson who he shot dead after meeting her at a nightclub.
